"Pinterest Video Won't Play After Downloading" — Here's Why (and the Fix)

You download a Pinterest video, tap play, and get a black screen. Or your player asks for a codec you've never heard of. The file downloaded fine, so nothing about this feels like it should be broken.

It almost always comes down to one specific format mismatch, not a failed download.

Why This Happens

Pinterest doesn't encode every video the same way. Depending on how the original creator uploaded it, the file can use either of two different video compression formats packed inside the same MP4 container.

Pinterest's own Pin spec guide confirms that video Pins are encoded using either H.264 or H.265, both stored inside a standard MP4 file.

H.264 plays almost everywhere without issue. H.265, also called HEVC, is newer and more efficient, but older players and some Windows installations don't include the decoder needed to play it.

That's the mismatch. The MP4 opens fine, but your player doesn't know how to decode what's actually inside it.

01 Confirm the File Downloaded Completely

Check the file size against what the downloader listed before you saved it. If the download was interrupted partway through, re-download it before troubleshooting anything else.

02 Try a Different Player First

Open the file in VLC Media Player instead of your device's default player. VLC includes its own built-in decoders and plays H.265 video without needing anything else installed.

If VLC plays the file normally, you've confirmed the download is fine and the issue is limited to your original player.

03 Install the Missing Codec on Windows

If you want the file to play in your default apps, like Windows Media Player or Photos, install the HEVC codec extension from the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft's own support documentation confirms that HEVC (H.265) support is not included in Windows by default and is available as a separate codec pack.

Once installed, the same file that failed before will typically play across every app on the system, not just the one you opened it in.

04 Convert the File as a Last Resort

If you need the video to play on an older device or one where you can't install anything, convert it to H.264. Any standard video converter can handle this, and the result plays on virtually any device or player.
